Appleby Horse Fair
Appleby Horse Fair is an annual gathering held each June in and around Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. It is one of the largest traditional Gypsy and Traveller fairs in Europe, dating back several centuries. The event centres on the buying and selling of horses, horse trading displays, washing horses in the River Eden, trotting on the roads, and socialising among Traveller and Romani communities. It also features markets, fairground attractions, music, and family reunions. While it is a vibrant cultural celebration that attracts thousands of visitors, it also brings road congestion and sometimes safety or welfare concerns that local authorities manage each year.
